PhD Society's social summer!
,

Phd Society Leuven is organising a variety of fun summer activities for PhD students at our university in the upcoming months.

Those of you who are visiting Belgium for the duration of your PhD or who just like to explore Leuven a bit more might particulary enjoy the Leuven canal cruise on Sunday, July 10. This is a long canal cruise from Leuven-Kampenhout-Leuven. It will start from the canal in Leuven and traverses through many lush green fields and beautiful sights.

Or for those looking for fun food and drinks, there is the bring-your-own-meat-and-drinks BBQ near the river Dijle in Arenberg Campus on  Friday June 18.

Make sure to check out the PhD society website for more details and registration if you wish to join too!

Academic Workshop
, ,

Phd Society has a a small-scale question & answer session with an invited speaker coming up on Friday November 26.

The event will take place in a Leuven bar called purpur. Guided by dr. Anya Topolski (philosopher at TUEindhoven, University of Kent, K.U.Leuven), different fields concerning the working processes of doing a PhD are discovered. Different topics as funding, presenting yourself, academic diversity and politics will be shortly introduced by Anya Topolski after which the floor will be open for questions, discussion and sharing experiences in your own field. By doing this we want to broaden our knowledge and awareness concerning the academic world in which we all work.

The value of your PhD in the job market
,

PhD society, our a partner organisiation at cross-faculty level, organises their first career event on December 1st. Their event differs from our own faculty career event coming up in February-March, in that the information provided is targeted towards all PhD students at our university, offering a broad perspective. In our own upcoming event, we will invite speakers who are former researchers at our faculty and hence will focus solely on our FEB colleagues and masters students.

We can definitely recommend both events if you're curious about your future career and life after your PhD!

Invited Speakers
- Yves Reymen (Consultant at McKinsey & Company, former KUL PhD Student)
- Veerle Bruggeman (Research Coordination Office (DOC), KULeuven)
- Karen Haegemans (Senior Researcher at Flemish government, Research Division)

About the event
The Speakers will share their own experiences as a PhD student at the KULeuven and their transition to their current position; give insight on the general aspects of the job market inside and outside academia. Each of the speakers will give a 15min presentation, followed by a +/-30min discussion forum, where questions can be directed towards the 3 speakers.

Date: Wednesday, December 1st, 2010
Time: 19h00-20h30
Location: (to be confirmed) - Hogenheuvelcollege Naamsestraat 69 3000 LEUVEN, Lokaal HOGC 02.28. AUD.J.VAN DER EECKEN.
